Indicator alerts

Recommended Posts

All trading involves risk. Losses can exceed deposits.

Hi all

The new web trading platform now offers 'Indicator' alerts which can be added via the 'Alerts' tab on a chart. Check out the step by step guide below and feel free to submit any feedback or suggestions on this new functionality.

You can add indicator alerts to any chart via the Alert > Indicator option.

Specify which indicator you would like to focus on and the specifics of the alert.

Choose when you would like to be alerted, and click 'Set Alert'. If you wanted to add another indicator alert feel free to do so. Add a message if required.

You'll see a confirmation of your alert...

...and also see it via the 'Alerts' fly out from the left hand side. This is also where you can delete if required. (Don't forget you need to choose between 'Price Change', 'Price Level' and 'Indicator Alert' at the top.)

James - Thanks, this looks like a good feature.

Digressing a little bit ... where is this status shown where one could reference it prior to placing a bet? I don't see it in product details or using info buttons unless I am missing something.

Hey  thanks for your message.

I have had a word with our shares desk and they have confirmed that a request has been raised to add functionality into the new platform to let you know as soon as you open the deal ticket. The result should be something similar to what happens when you open a 'closing only' stock (as below) which appears directly under the SELL/BUY button.

Restrictions on stocks are very rare, however this sometimes occurs with stock which is being heavily shorted in the underlying market. The restriction you have encountered would only be on shorting stock via a Forward Shares trade on spread betting.

A manual work around (which I appreciate isn't perfect but may tie you over until this new functionality is added) is to test with a working order at a level which wouldn't be triggered. You can then delete the working order.

Thanks for your response.

Yesterday several of the spread bet shorts for stock forwards had this message, I must have tried 4 or more. Yet when I look at the market data it showed the IG pool to be 92% long for FCAU in this example.

Are you saying it is pretty much standard for forwards?

Thanks for adding this functionality. Unfortunately, not all technical indicators are available to be used as alerts. Is there an intention to add other indicators to the list?

Hi

I just re-read what I said yesterday and I think I need to clarify a couple of points. The majority of stocks don't have restrictions on the whole, and the majority of the deal flow which comes through IG goes through automatically and without restriction, however of the shares forwards on spread betting, about 40% ~ can only be shorted on the DFB.

This basically comes down to stock which have a high or variable borrow charge.I hope this clarifies things. Our senior shares dealer is aware of this, as is our project owner of the new web trading platform, so I just wanted to assure you we are working on your feedback and adding this functionality to the platform.

hi  - Currently there is nothing on the road map to add additional indicator alerts, however we are always looking for client sentiment and feedback. Which ones would you specifically like?

Also to the wider community, if you would like to see additional indicator alerts please let me know and I'l pass back to the Project Manager.

Are there any plans to add alerts to trendlines? eg price crossing through a trendline?

Until recently I have used the old aka "classic" platform. I also tend to use a tablet. In my experience on desktop/laptop/windows alerts notify correctly if the "IG settings->notifications" are set correctly. I recall that if not logged in then the pop-up alert notification does not (cannot) activate. On a mobile the alert shows up in notifications along with a sound alert if WiFi/mobile data is enabled. Hi ,

Thanks for the reply.

Not using a mobile though, just sat in front of a PC (well an iMac) logged in all the time with alert settings on as per screenshot.

The alerts are great, if only you could create an alert for price crossing a trendline.  At the moment I'm guessing when price will cross the trendline to be alerted.

Would be great if I could right click the trendline and create an alert.

Thanks.

Hi James,

I use Directional Movement indicator on my charts. Could you pass along to the Project Manager to add this to the indicator alert?

Also, I always get the long detailed indicators that triggered the alert, which obscured the message I actually put on the alert because the message is placed at the end of the alert. Is there a way to just show the custom message I set for the alert, and nothing else?

Thanks.

And why not add a function to attach an order to the alert to buy or sell

i know prorealtime have this but it would be better to have it on server and not local on pc

Is there any news on being able to set an alert when price crosses a trendline?

Hi there,

I have been using indicator alerts on the old platform for a while now and have recently set-up on the new platform - which is great I must say.

However I have noticed that my alerts on all of my devices (PC, tablet and mobile) are now 6 minutes late. Since I am using 1 minute charts this is causing me to miss opportunities. It is a very recent development so I am wondering if anyone is across it as yet.

Thanks

Hi , I just tried to replicate the late alarm problem and am not finding it, the alerts seem to be working fine. If the problem continues it might be worth repeating the question through the week in case it goes unseen, if you add a @ symbol

before the tag of one of the IG staff they will get a notification they have been mentioned in a post.

Thanks

Will find out tomorrow if the problem still occurs and will be sure to get onto someone about it. Cheers

    • Hey @dmedin. That news piece is something I long suspected. If anyone can move the market with just one tweet then why shouldn't the cronies profit from it. I'm just surprised this has taken so long to get to the "news".
    • Ok, so I took this approach to the next level. Rather than telling the algorithm enter long at 25% and enter short at 75% levels, I decided to let the algorithm decide itself at what levels its best to enter short or long. This simplifies the strategy and boosts its gains dramatically. Top level stats over 100,000 5min candles: Gain: +1,307% % of winning trades: 60% Starting with a £2000 account, after 1 year and 1 quarter that account would have grown to almost £30k (£28k). The equity curve looks also a lot more stable, too. I resolved the issue with the lot size, this is now a formula. Unfortunately we still have 3 negative months, but overall the max runup is a lot higher than the max drawdown. Overall time in market is only 20%, so there should be the opportunity to run multiple of this strategy on different assets simultaneously to further boost the return. If let's say 3 of these programs could run simultaneously and deliver similar results you could grow £2000 to £100k within about 18 months. Still not as good as the results of the few world-class top traders like Ross Cameron from Warrior Trading, etc but a start nonetheless. The variables which the program optimised are the following: Take Profit for Long Positions: 84 points Take Profit for Short Positions: 70 Points Entry LvL for Long Positions: 23 Points below the low of previous day Entry LvL for Short Positions: 7 Points below the high of previous day Interestingly, it turned out the strategy works best without a set stop-loss, but just to close out any open positions at 21.00 o'clock at night, if not already closed by the take profit rule. I'm gonna simulate this on NASDAQ next. Obviously will need to find out the 4 variables again, as these will be subject to the Index where this is traded.   What do you guys think? Worth a shot this strategy?
    • Lool, I'm sorry for my first post here, but it's funny :)
