High Grade Copper (A$1) Price Scale Units on IG ProRealTrader

Hi,

I'm new to IG and the ProRealTrader platform and have run into a problem I've been unable to find the answer to, hence the following questions.

I'm looking at High Grade Copper (A$1) using IG ProRealTrader and it's indicating prices around 44,271.6, which doesn't correspond with the prices quoted by CME Copper (HGU4) which are around US$ 4.42165 (as I'm writing this).

What:

  • are the price scale units IG ProRealTrader is applying to High Grade Copper (A$1); and
  • is the underlying copper market for the High Grade Copper (A$1) CFD?

Where can I find this type of information on all commodity furtures CFDs on the IG website?

Cheers

Trevor

Dear @KPS-BNT,

Thank you for your post and welcome to the IG community.

We obtain the cash prices from our liquidity providers’ data feeds for spot copper just as for FX pairs. From the data feeds we get the best bid and offer prices, add the IG spread and offer it to our clients directly.

Our commodities futures contracts are priced directly from the underlying market and are then adjusted for spread. The spreads are on our website: Commodities CFD Details

These also apply to pro real time.

Thanks,

Hi KoketsolG,

Thank you for your prompt response. However, that does not provide me the definitive understanding I desire.

1  Chart Price Units

The first and fundamental question is what are the units of the chart price scale amount of 44,271.6 shown for High Grade Copper (US2.50) and High Grade Copper (A$1)? It is in US$, US cents, thousandths of 1 US$, ten thousandths of 1 US$ (what it looks like it could be), etc per Tonne or kilogram or pound?

This leads to the question of "What is 1 point and 1 tick"?

If the quoted 44,271.6 is in units of ten thousands of a US$, then is 1 Point = US$1.00, or  is 1 Point = 1/10,000th US$, (more generally, the digit unit immediately to the left of the decimal point)?

It is assumed that the Tick value is the amount to the right of the decimal point.

Similar questions apply to the Copper and Copper ($5 min) CFDs that are priced around 9,300.

2  Underlying Futures Contract

Also, according to the IG Base Metals Contract specification the Copper Contract is 25 metric tonnes, and appears it is quoted in US Dollars. However, the only High Grade Futures Contract I've been able to find using Google is the CME Copper Futures Contract which provides a contract size of 25,000 pounds, which is specified as quoted in US Dollars. Thus it is unclear to me as to the actual underlying market upon which the IG Copper CFDs are based, and hence if the chart price unit being applied is price unit / kilogram or price unit / pound.

There is a further complication with IG's Copper CFDs. There are 4 IG Copper CFDs:

  • Copper,
  • Copper ($5 mini)
  • High Grade Copper ($2.50)
  • High Grade Copper (A$1)

The prices for the first 2 appear to be identical, currently around 9,300, while the later two have prices currently around 42,700. So what is the underlying Future Contract definition for each of these 4 CFDS?

Cheers

Trevor

    • With Bitcoin aiming for a new ATH, this staking might be the best option to maximum holding
    • Tbh, trading can be frustrating, I keep trying different strategy to perfect my trading skill but all seems to be in vain. Recently, I learnt we can use AI to predict the market to trade, so I decide to start asking AI to analyze when btc is overbought so I can look for short entry but this seems not to work against as most trade I enter end up hitting my SL. I know this is part of the learning process so I don’t risk too much but it hurt to lose fund especially when you are trying your best to make your first positive trade. Sometime, I just feel the market is totally against me and that further discourages me from futures trading. Recently, I got introduced to BTC staking on some platforms like BGBTC on bitget, Babylon chain, Solv protocol, Coredao etc but that doesn’t quench my hunger to understand BTC volatility since I will just stake my btc and earn apr. I want to understand how this volatility works so I can start making something from futures trading rather than just staking to earn apr. Also, I feel staking is for spot traders that intend to hold for a longer period and that doesn’t expose you to the market. I am not like most trader that prioritize profit over knowledge even when that is the final goal.
