Margin required before a trade

How can I find how much margin a trade will need  Before making a trade ?

Can anybody explore a bit more about more about margin and why it changeswhen a position is open.

I assume that free margin (available funds) may float as it is  equal to Equity - Margin, and Equity is Funds + P/L
