'The Lockdown Effect'; Treasury officials public sector net borrowing forecasts (in real terms).

Place your bets; (March 2020 was £55 billion)

£340 billion?

£520 billion?

Covid 19 being the dominant strain this season meaning that if you have had a cold or flu this winter then you've probably already had it.

Many small and medium sized business leaders have said they intend to lay off staff as soon as the furlough payments stop. Many people are already unemployed they just don't know it yet.

Of the NHS recorded deaths from covid just 0.01% were healthy children. Just 0.1% were healthy under 40 year olds and just 1% were healthy under 60 year olds.

Many more will die because of the lockdown than be saved by it because of undiagnosed diseases and the effects of the economic disaster ahead.

"Wave of COVID-19 bankruptcies poses next threat to US economy ... AFP Many firms now bleeding cash are in for a tough ride until the economy fully rebounds, which likely will come only after a vaccine is developed and broadly employed"

https://www.afp.com/en/news/3954/wave-covid-19-bankruptcies-poses-next-threat-us-economy-doc-1ri6jz2

Barstool’s Dave Portnoy goes on a rant fighting back against COVID lockdowns: “I would rather die of corona ... or take my chances ... I don’t want to start over ... There are no great options but you can’t just decimate the entire economy.”

Wait for the curve to flatten, no wait for the tracking app, no wait for a vaccine. Scientists with their toy 'models' and the politicians who listen to them do not have a clue what is going on.

Forget 'models' you don't need them when there is a ton of empirical evidence out there already.

Covid is a bad flu affecting mostly those over 60 with serious pre-existing medical conditions. There is no evidence that total lockdown would ever work and it hasn't. The WHO states you only need to wear a mask if you are caring for the infected.

"Let's be brutally honest. There have been 226,000 UK cases of Corona in 65,000,000 people. That's a case rate of 0.4% (1 person in 250). And 33,000 have died (0.05%, 1 person in 2,000) And over 99% of us have our lives on indefinite hold. Comments?"

More brutal honesty;

"Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell says almost 40% of households earning less than $40,000/year lost their jobs in the month of March."

America has plenty of money and power to implement a UBI and healthcare for all.

mate, politicians are completely trashing the economy for years to come before your very eyes. When you're dumpster diving for food scraps healthcare will be the very last thing on your mind.

the lockdown isn't just talk, the law is preventing you from doing anything but to just sit watch it all burn.

And yet there is quite a lot of activity still going on, especially for delivery drivers and other 'essential' jobs (i.e. the foundational working class that the country cannot go on without) 🧐

Nonsense, Californians are all over the beaches at the weekends.

If they think California is 'Communist' it just shows how far to the right America is.

Mind you, Americans are not especially noted for their subtlety of thought and sophistication :P

err,

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti tries to clear up confusion about whether the stay-at-home order will be extended for three months. He says as long as COVID-19 exists, the stay-at-home order will remain, but with some flexibility for businesses to open.

Big anti-lockdown protests throughout Germany, 5000 in Stuttgart alone.

One rule for you and another for them, after the Ferguson fiasco was the Scottish health adviser caught attending a picnic and here the NZ health minister caught at the beach.

And in the US politicians and reporters at a press conference immediately abandon their face masks as soon as they think the cameras have stopped rolling.

It's like we're all being treated like children but the scary thing is that 50% of the population seem to want it.

New Lord Sumption interview today with the BBC absolutely gets it right. There is no excuse to continue the lockdown except for politicians to save face having done everything to put the fear of god into everyone in the first place. There is no danger of the NHS being overwhelmed. Businesses are being destroyed, peoples health and futures are being destroyed. Individuals should have the right to choose the amount of risk they take. Of all the pandemics documented over the last hundred years this one is the least severe of the lot.

It should be apparent to all that this lockdown has turned into total farce and the rules being made for social distancing to allow limited resumption of daily activities are just ridiculous.

Here a US tennis club official can barely keep a straight face as she reads out the new rules that will allow the club to re-open to the public.

    • Start the conversation The US election is scheduled for Tuesday 3 November 2020, when all 50 states and Washington DC will cast their votes. The vote spans six different time zones, so the first exit polls will be available at around 11pm (EST) when West Coast voting closes. In the UK, that will be around 4am (GMT) on Wednesday 4 November 2020. The election is likely to create opportunities for traders, with price movements expected across a range of forex pairs, indices and commodities in the run-up to polling day. Volatility related to the election could continue until congress certifies the result on Wednesday 6 January 2021, or even until the winner is inaugurated on Wednesday 20 January 2021. What should traders expect to see during the US election? All US markets tend to experience increased volatility in the run up to a presidential election, including USD forex pairs, indices and commodities. That’s because many investors will attempt to lock in positions before the result is announced – using polls to gauge public sentiment. The aim is to take full advantage of the price moves that occur when the country’s political direction is confirmed. At the top level, early indications suggest that the following could be on the cards if one of these two main candidates win: Donald Trump A Trump win could see an escalation of the trade war, potentially causing problems for some US exporters and having a negative impact on the value of the dollar. However, this effect could be offset by reassurances that tax cuts and deregulation will continue – boosting the US economy. Joe Biden A Biden win could see tensions in the trade war cool, providing a boost to US exporters and the dollar. However, these effects could be offset by tax increases for high-income households, and more limited deregulation.   How will markets react to the different candidates? Market commentary by IG Senior Market Analyst Joshua Mahony Stocks Markets hate uncertainty, and historically the perception has been that a new president might bring policies that could be harmful for stocks. This happened in 2016 when analysts were confident that a Trump presidency would spark a market collapse. But, we are now seeing that same fear creep in as people consider a Biden presidency and the potential uncertainty it could cause. Biden is openly more left-leaning, and his policies are expected to be geared towards human needs rather than those of investors and traders. This sentiment isn’t helped by suggestions that Biden would reverse Trump’s tax cuts, and it is likely that markets will rise alongside the potentially increased chance of a Trump victory as we approach the election. USD The value of a currency is supposed to reflect the health of an economy and its future prospects. Many are expecting Biden to be less focused on the markets than his Republican opponent, so the dollar could weaken in the event of a Biden victory. However, this effect could be offset if Biden is able to improve relations between the US and China after years of market anxiety. In this scenario, it would be the Chinese yuan which may benefit the most, with the trade war having sparked huge upside for USD/CNH. Keep in mind that if the wider markets fall on a Biden victory – including US stocks and indices – the dollar would likely rally in the short-term to reflect a risk-off move as investors turn to USD. Gold The prospect of a more expansive fiscal policy under Biden, and from a government which is happy to embark on substantial spending programmes, could provide a boost to precious metals. There’s a caveat here too, because in the past precious metals have also followed the same patterns as the stock markets during times of crisis. So, any collapse in equity markets that may come from a change at the White House could drag gold lower in the immediate period. Plus, while Trump has finally seen the kind of stimulus he would have hoped for, a Biden win could result in a more substantial stimulus package if the Democrats gain a foothold in Congress.   How are you trading?
    • Dax has been volatile today. Down 600, Dax down 4% on COVID fears. US open in 10 minutes.
