How much drift can there be with a stop order?

I'm a bit new to this, and am unclear about stop orders. How long can a stop order take to come into effect after the price has reached the stop level? Are we talking seconds, minutes or hours? It's particularly important to me as I'm thinking of dealing in the very volatile Bitcoin market.
