Ok thanks, lesson learnt

Hi quick question about holding long and short positions on the ftse 100 at the same time: I had a short position which was offside (although one that I wanted to keep) and decided to buy a long position to mitigate the overall view. When I executed the buy my short positions were automatically closed, later in the day with the market swings I could have got out of the short position at parity so it was fustrating.. What did I do wrong in executing the buy trade? Any help welcome thanks
