How not to read the PMI data

Recently I have seen lots of cases on Twitter where people have confused themselves over what the Purchasing Manager Index data shows

When China posted a reading of 52.0 for March, after falling to 35.7 in February, there was a lot of talk of a V-shaped recovery. This not true.
