Instruments not available in demo account

Guest Stef

Question

Hi,

I've developed a couple of trading strategies in ProRealTime that I would like to forward test for a period before taking them live.
To do this, I was planning on setting them up in ProOrder to run on my demo account.

Problem is that the data feeds that I pay for on my live account are not available on my demo account??

I'm not willing to run these strategies live without an incubation period first. So how do I do this?

Like I said, I already pay for the feed, so it does not make sense that it should not be available.

Stef

The solution from IG at the moment is that the feed can be made available on my demo account, but:

- for a limited time (two months) only

- and I have two pay for the two months in advance

Wow, great solution!

Not only will I have to pay for the data feed twice (and in advance in the case of the demo account), I also have no way going forward after two months should I want to develop and test more strategies.

I honestly feel that if you want to remove the paper trading functionality from ProRealTime, then you have to provide an alternative way of doing this.

 At the moment,

IG PROVIDES NO FEASIBLE WAY TO TEST DEVELOPED STRATEGIES!

This is a huge hole in your offering.

Even more confusing...

On my live account, I can get 15 min delayed data at no charge. But, one my demo account I can get NO DATA unless I pay for the L1 feed... in advance... for a limited period...

Again, please let me know how I can forward test my strategies in a demo environment, if you have decided not to include PRT's PaperTrading module, and are unwilling/unable to make any data available for testing without wanting to charge for data for which I have already paid?

I don't see that IG is very forthcoming with any solutions on this!

Stef

Hi ,

Apologies for the delay on this one.

Currently we are only able to display equity data on CFD demo accounts for two weeks, and after this time we have to disable access. I'm afraid the charge you pay to enable the feeds only extends to your Live accounts, not your demo account at present.

In regards to the paper trading module on ProRealTime, this is not something that is available through the version offered via IG, nor are there any current plans to offer this this in the near future.

To test your strategies on equities, you can always make use of the ProBacktest module available through the ProRealTime charts. I do understand the points you have raised however, and will pass these onto our exchange team for future consideration.

Thanks,
Dan

Hi . You know as well as I that PRT's backtester has some severe limitations (like lack of look-inside-bar testing) and cannot be relied upon without live testing a strategy first. ProOrder and ProBacktest do not behave the same way and do not produce the same results currently.

More than that though... This is not the proper way to develop automated strategies.

After backtesting, and optimising (and unfortunately likely overoptimising and curve-fitting) your strategy, the next step is to forward test the system on live market data (preferably in a demo environment) for a period before taking it live.

Please answer the following questions:

1) How do I do the above using IG?

2) Why does IG not provide or plan on providing the paper trading module?

Hi ,

Will you please also respond to the following?

Why can one not have 15min delayed and/or end-of-day equity data in your demo account?

This would solve the problem and there should not be any issue with providing this.

You can already get this for free on most other trading platforms, and web sites; Google Finance, Yahoo Finance, Standard Bank Online, and many many others.

For forward testing a strategy you do not need an L1 or L2 feed.

Why not make delayed or end of day data available in demo?

Stef

Hi ,

The agreements we have in place at present only allow us to display equity data on demo CFD accounts for a maximum two weeks. We do provide a large range of instruments to test in our demo environment, it's just equities where we are limited at present.

I do understand you points regarding the backesting functionality, and ProRealTime are currently working to improve this feature. Nonetheless, I'll check with our team in regards to your queries on paper trading.

Thanks,
Dan

Hi ,

Can you give me some feedback on this?

I do not see any way (paid or otherwise) that I can forward test automated (equities-based) trading strategies making use of the IG PRT combo. And not many ideas are forthcoming from IG. Is my only solution to look elsewhere - PRT-direct or other broker/platform providers?

Hi ,

We're going to discuss with IT-Finance whether it will be feasible to add paper trading to the IG ProRealTime offering. At present  there are no other alternatives to forward test strategies on CFD equities once these have expired on demo accounts I'm afraid.

    • Wheat Elliott Wave Analysis Function - Trend Mode - Trend Structure -Impulse wave Position - Wave A of (B) Direction - Wave A of (B) is still in play Details -  Wheat daily and H4 have been adjusted due to how fast and deep decline from 720’4 has emerged. The long-term forecast on the daily chart shows that the surge to 720’4 is part of the impulse wave from March 2022. We are now in wave (5) which is expected to emerge into a 3-wave structure. Price now appears to be in wave A after which it will correct upside for B before returning downside. Overview: Since late May, grain prices have been falling sharply, with Wheat shedding over 20% since May 28th, 2024. This decline is about to erase the gains made from mid-April to late May. The nearly one-month sell-off adds to the long-term decline from March 2022, when Wheat traded at 1364’4. Currently trading at 571’4, Wheat is likely to fall further toward 500 in the coming weeks.   Daily Chart Analysis: The decline from March 2022 is forming a bearish impulse wave structure in the primary degree. The 5th wave is completing a diagonal structure, which has been the most time-consuming among the actionary waves, lasting nearly 21 months. The price is currently in wave (5) of 5 (circled), which will likely evolve into a 3-wave structure targeting the 500 major psychological level.   H4 Chart Analysis: The H4 chart shows the sub-waves of wave (5), which is now close to completing its first leg - wave A of (5). A corrective bounce is expected to follow for wave B before the price turns downside for wave C of (5) toward 500, provided the 720’4 pivot is not breached. Wheat and other grains are overwhelmingly bearish and may continue in this direction for the next several weeks before major bullish corrections begin.   In conclusion, Wheat prices remain bearish with potential for further declines, targeting the 500 psychological level, contingent on the completion of the current corrective wave B and the subsequent wave C of (5). DIRECTION: Bottom in wave {iv}.   DETAILS: Looking for a triangle in wave {iv} of 3 as we have found resistance on TL2 at 200$.     TXN Elliott Wave Analysis Trading Lounge 4Hr Chart, Texas Instruments Inc., ( TXN) 4Hr Chart TXN Elliott Wave Technical Analysis FUNCTION: Counter Trend MODE: Corrective STRUCTURE: Triangle POSITION: Wave (e) of {iv}. DIRECTION: Bottom in (e).   DETAILS: Looking for wave (e) to be near completion to then resume higher and find support on top of 200$.   Welcome to our latest Elliott Wave analysis for Texas Instruments Inc. (TXN). This analysis provides an in-depth look at TXN's price movements using the Elliott Wave Theory, helping traders identify potential opportunities based on current trends and market structure. We will cover insights from both the daily and 4-hour charts to offer a comprehensive perspective on TXN's market behavior.   * TXN Elliott Wave Technical Analysis – Daily Chart* In our Elliott Wave analysis of Texas Instruments Inc. (TXN), we observe a counter-trend corrective pattern characterized by a triangle structure. TXN is currently positioned in wave {iv} of 3, suggesting a bottoming process in wave {iv}. The recent price action indicates that TXN has encountered resistance around the TL2 trendline at $200. This resistance could imply the formation of a triangle in wave {iv}, setting the stage for a potential resumption of the upward trend once the triangle completes. Traders should monitor the $200 level for signs of a breakout or further consolidation within the triangle.   *TXN Elliott Wave Technical Analysis – 4Hr Chart* On the 4-hour chart, TXN is following a counter-trend corrective mode within a triangle structure, specifically in wave (e) of {iv}. The current analysis suggests that wave (e) is nearing completion, which could signal the end of the triangle and the beginning of a move higher. The completion of wave (e) should ideally find support above the $200 level, aligning with the daily chart's indication of a possible upward resumption post-triangle. Traders should watch for the termination of wave (e) and the subsequent price action to confirm a bullish continuation.   Technical Analyst : Alessio Barretta Source : Tradinglounge.com get trial here!
