Why could I not open my short position? The error said something like 'shortage of stock to short'?

abudhabitrader

Question

Can anyone answer this question? I went to short a stock this morning at a price per point that saw the margin within my balance but after clicking place deal the website prevented my opening and showed me an error. The error was fleeting so I struggled to read it before it had disappeared but I think it said something regarding a lack of short positions and to call a brokerage? This error cost me £200 in profits so I was wondering how I can avoid this in the future.

Cheers

I'm not sure if there is a short trade facility with IG Markets on stocks!!!

'price per point' would imply a cfd platform but in order to sell contracts you don't hold the broker needs to find someone to lend them to you, if no one is willing to do so then no deal.

    • Gold Elliott Wave Analysis It appears the current Gold pullback is completed and the commodity could be set to continue the all-time bullish trend to a fresh record high. From the Elliott wave theory perspective, Gold is expected to rally further to 2800 and beyond before the next pullback starts. Daily Chart Analysis On the daily chart, Gold completed the cycle degree wave II in October 2023 at 1810. Thus, the current bullish cycle can be traced to that date. Currently, the price is in wave ((iii)) of 5 of (3) of ((3)) of III. This indicates that Gold still has the potential to rally another 30-50% from the current price. Thus, buyers should be interested in buying pullbacks. H4 Chart Analysis On the H4 chart, the price is in wave (iv) of ((iii)) which appears to have finished or may do a double zigzag if the current bounce from 2701 is corrective. A zigzag structure has been completed and the next price action will determine whether recovery for wave (v) of ((iii)) will happen or wave (iv) will drop lower in a double zigzag structure. Whichever is the case, Gold is expected to continue to the upside to complete wave ((iii)) before the next pullback in ((iv)) starts. Eaton Corp PLC, (ETN) 1H Chart ETN Elliott Wave Technical Analysis FUNCTION: Trend MODE: Impulsive STRUCTURE: Motive POSITION: Wave iii of (v). DIRECTION: Upside in wave (v). Liquid staking, a mechanism that allows users to stake their assets and receive liquid tokens, has gained traction within the Ethereum ecosystem. Platforms like Lido Finance and Rocket Pool have been at the forefront of this trend, offering users the ability to earn staking rewards while maintaining liquidity. However, a new player, Swell Network, is entering the arena with a unique proposition. Swell's unique approach involves leveraging innovative protocols to maximize yield potential for stalkers. Swell has secured $3.75 million in a seed round and plans to launch its own Ethereum layer-2 chain in H2 2024, while it aims to attract both seasoned DeFi users and newcomers. As the Ethereum ecosystem continues to evolve, liquid staking solutions like Swell is unlocking new opportunities for its community with multiple events hosted by tier 1 CEXs like Bitget and even a premarket trading. How do you see the future of liquid staking shaping the DeFi landscape?
