why can I not trade US stocks pre (or post) market?

joek

Question

For some reason I cannot seem to place orders on US stocks with extended hours trading during pre or post market trading hours even though IG seems to indicate this is an option.  I seem to have no trouble during normal trading hours but either side seems to be a problem (my W-8BEN as a non US resident for tax purposes remains valid). Where I already own such stocks a button appears to the right indicating I can sell so the issue may relate only to buying. If I try to place a market order this is rejected on account of the type, but I cannot even place a limit order (i.e. that could fill during normal trading hours) as the order is rejected..

Perhaps this is normal, but I cannot see anything on IG that indicates that it is. If anyone has an explanation I would be grateful

Hi, have you checked that the stocks are on IG's 'all sessions' list?

Thanks for your reply.  I hadn't, but I just did and the ones I tried to trade are.  I tried several times to trade Apple for instance - it looks like I can sell (it has a sell button to the right of my position)  but not buy.  The other stocks (both US & UK)  just say 'market closed', so the market is open for these stocks, I can probably sell, but I cannot buy.  Also the 'available to deal' section suggest it is not a funding issue, unless this is not the case (I have unsettled debit to almost the same amount, but I'm fairly sure the problem existed even when that wasn't the case & i had plentiful funds)

This approach provides insights into market trends, helping traders identify potential setups for both entry and exit points across these major markets. Elliott Wave Analysis for Major Indices: As we approach the upcoming Federal Reserve meeting in just six days, all eyes are on the U.S. economy. The upcoming PPI (Producer Price Index) figures represent the final significant economic data point that the Federal Reserve will consider before making its next rate decision. The market's reaction to this data could set the tone for how the major indices move in the short term. At present, I am analyzing two possible wave counts for the indices: 1. Wave (2) Low in Place: This scenario suggests that the corrective wave has completed, and the market is now poised to rally higher. 2. Wave (2) Not Yet Complete: Alternatively, there is still room for further downside before Wave (2) concludes. Currently, I lean toward the bullish scenario, as the price action in leading stocks like Amazon (AMZN) and Microsoft (MSFT) suggests underlying strength in the broader market. However, I remain flexible in my outlook, awaiting further confirmation from key market movements and the PPI data to finalize this wave structure.
