Apple and Tesla Stock Split

Apple and Tesla have both announced they will carry out stock splits on Monday 31 August 2020 making it easier and cheaper for retail clients to trade.

Apple is splitting its shares four-for-one. This means there will be four times as many shares circulating, at a quarter of their previous value

Tesla is splitting its shares five-for-one. This means there will be five times as many shares circulating, at a fifth of their previous value

Commission-free investing

To help you benefit from this stock split, we’re offering active investors the opportunity to buy and sell US shares with zero commission to pay.*

How will my existing positions be affected?

If you hold a position in either company at close of business on 28 August, you’ll be affected by the stock split. We’ll make the necessary changes to your open positions and holdings before the markets open on 31 August. You won’t need to do anything.

Plus, if you have a working order to open at close of business on 28 August, we’ll cancel it. You’ll be able to reopen it manually when the markets open again.

Given that the total price of the open positions hold before the split, remains the same after the split, what does it mean exactly that positions holder will be affected ?

So does a 1.0 spread bet position on Telsa automatically increase 5 fold aswell to 5.0  when the share price drops by a fifth or will I have to make that adjustment myself just before trading closes?

Hi Charlottel,

Do we need to worry about adjusting stop limits on the above company holdings.

You are correct the positions will be multiplied by (lets use apple as an example) 4 and the price will be divided by 4. So it will not have a profitable/ negative impact but it will have changes on your account.

Hello,
I am using the IG Simulator.

I bought 10 Apple CFD on the 25/08 for a level of  506.18$.

From your post, it seems that IG will automatically take in account the Apple Split (4/1) and change my stock from 10 to 40 right ?

However, on my IG Simulation account, I still have only 10 CFD, is that normal ?

Thank you,

Louis

Should the P&L in my Positions window for Tesla be over stating the profit by approx + 300%?  This error started after the stock split.

Its not reflected in the total P&L just in the Tesla row.
