Cannot close positions on web based platform, mobile app and cannot get through on the phone. What a nightmare. I doubt we will be refunded for lost trades as they will have in their T&C some protection against this but from a branding this is very damaging. Has anyone seen an evaluation of the various spread-betting platforms for reliability?

My concern is that may be a major announcement that they can't cover, So better to shut down the system.    Paranoid or what.

I'm sure that would not happen, would it?

Very good question.  Their terms & conditions basically gets them out of any eventuality, but I believe they are still at fault, breaking certain FCA rules and laws.
