Despite the wealth of advice in this forum, it's only when i started taking it that i started losing it all.  Let me explain.

err, hate to be the one to remind you but when you joined the forum back in April this was the sort of stuff you were posting, losing all the time, that's why people started offering advice in the first place.

I think what is confusing me are statements like "The margin is 5%." This means the margin = the money that I supply, on top of which is the broker's money which is not shown? Or does the value in the "Margin" box include the money the broker is lending me?

Moreover, I've heard reference to leverage being an account setting. Is it possible to set the leverage of my demo account to 1:20 rather than 1:50?

the margin and the leverage are the same thing just looked at from different ends, the margin is the fraction of the trades total value that you need to put up to open the trade. so margin to leverage is just % converted to a ratio, 10% margin is leverage of 1:10, 5% margin is leverage of 1:20 and 2% margin is leverage of 1:50. so to go from 1:50 to 1:20 instead of needing to put up 2% of the total you now need to put up 5%. if the trade goes against you and losses start to eat into the margin requirement you will receive a 'margin call' and you will need to either close the trade or add funds, if you do neither the trade will be shut down for you.

You can calc the margin requirement yourself but it's calculated differently for different markets, there is an IG page on this but I can't find it, perhaps @JamesIG, can check as the page linked below has a link to 'how margin is calculated' but the link just takes you back to the top of the same page.

  3. Pause candle for Dow yesterday, still at recent range high so anticipating a test of Friday's high 26550 otherwise will need to find support. Ftse caught up with the others yesterday and sits at recent resistance while Dax hangs onto the small gain it made on Friday.

S&P sits just below range high needs a spur for one direction or the other, must be about time for a Trump tweet.

Please explain to me how commisions work. If I have a $500 account and I open a position of 10% of my equity on the AUD/USD currency pair, how much commission would I have to pay and do I only pay at the start or also after I close the position? (PS. For example purposes I am going to say that I only plan to hold position for 10 pips)

    Hi, commissions are charged for share trading, all forex is by leveraged cfd's and instead of commission you pay the spread. see link;

Hi, it's within trading hours (last time was 12:40 GMT today), I'm using the new web platform with a modern laptop and fibre internet connection.

Hi, I can't think what it might be, if the majors were cutting out throughout the day there should be a hue and cry from dozens on the forum here, I can only suggest to make a note of the times and name and use the chat on the 'contact us' page to query and they should be able to arrange someone from tech to get in touch.

I dunno ... trading looks and sounds good in theory but in reality you have to resist the temptation to trade 99 times out of 100.  Unless you are omnipotent (or an algorithm) you often miss the good opportunities.  Resisting the temptation to take on **** trades is beyond the capability of mere mortals.

how simple would the rules need to be before you would actually obey them? I mean for the above system you need only look at the chart once a day after market close and see if 2 lines had crossed  sheeez, you must have noticed you are up and down like a yoyo, throughout the day it's 'go long', 'no go short', 'no long' and that's on a daily chart lol.

Anyone else notice that the alerts don't match the chart , I have my RSI alert set to tell me when to check chart, however have noticed that the chart and the alert at the point of trigger are nowhere close. I have checked the price bias ie low mid high and it still does not add up. I contacted IG who simply said just reinstall the app , a bit insulting really as don't use the app an trade from my PC

Hi, can't find any problem with the alert, try testing on a 1 min chart without the changes to the default settings and without the added rsi shaded areas, just period 5 crossing 50.

Just had the alert ping in for the DAX at 15.00hrs yet the cross happened at 14.00hrs leaving me an hour late to check

Hi, if you right click on the chart and click 'export chart' it puts a copy in your download folder without any personal data for you to post.

  9. Following on from this morning's post Dax  took out 11989 and just missed R2 before falling back to R1. Dow made a stab for R1 but missed though remains above the pivot, US market closed today so may be a quite afternoon ahead.

    Hi,

Frequently during trading hours I will see live prices disappear off most of the major FX pairs (the same ones every time) and I cannot deal as it says 'market closed'.

Is this a volatility problem or a technical glitch?

    Thanks in advance...

Hi the FX markets should be open from 9pm Sunday (UK time) right through to 10pm Friday, which platform are you having the problem with and what type of device? If you are using a mobile could it be a connection problem?

If the GBP is tanking and FTSE rising then somebody is loving British exports.......But I would say inflation is a big issue Britain imports so much we cant have a weak pound for too long now

yes the pound is suffering as a no deal Brexit looks increasingly likely and could yet retest the lows that came after the referendum back in 2016 (when everyone thought Brexit meant no deal anyway). We have the quarterly UK inflation report this Wednesday should be interesting though it's been fairly low and steady around 2% for this year so far.

    Thanks.

It seems that the margin is automatically calculated, and I cannot change it. It seems that leverage is quite high in some cases (35:1 or even 50:1). I want to do long term trades using less leverage so that volatility doesn't come back to bite me. Is there no option to lower this ratio to, say, 10:1 or 20:1?

yes, by lowering the contract/bet size. It will depend on which country you are trading from and which market,

say you are in the UK trading ftse, the regulator has made the min margin requirement  5% which is the equivalent of max leverage of 20:1, as you say the margin is auto calc'd so on the platform fill in a order of deal ticket, adjust the £/point size up and down and look how the amount of margin required changes (amount you must have in your account to fund the trade).

note that the mt4 platform allows a much lower minimum bet size than the online platform but can't trade individual stocks.

    Hello Friend,

I want to trade in stock market by observing the charts of underlying stocks on NYSE not CFD's, in that manner I analyze underlying stocks and trade their CFD's accordingly.. but on IG charts are only available for CFD's.. so can you help me by giving suggestion about "how to avail stock charts of underlying stocks(NYSE)?" I will be thankful if you assist  me.

something like Yahoo Finance will give you exchange based charts of individual exchange listed companies.
